Validated hourly grid GHG emissions data.

Open Grid Emissions is a peer-reviewed open-source initiative that seeks to fill a critical need for high-quality, easily-accessible, hourly grid emissions data for GHG accounting, policymaking, energy attribute certificate markets, and academic research.

Frequently asked questions.

  • The Open Grid Emissions Initiative includes the first publicly-available dataset of validated hourly emissions and generation data for the U.S. power sector.

  • The Open Grid Emissions Initiative uses the U.S. EPA’s eGRID annual emissions methodology as its foundation, and uses both measured hourly emissions data and reported monthly data that is assigned an hourly profile using innovative methods.

  • Both the OGE code and datasets are available to use under permissive open source licenses. The OGE code uses the MIT License, and the dataset uses the Creative Commons Attribution International 4.0 (CC-BY-4.0) license.

  • In addition to the historical OGE dataset, Singularity Energy also has a Grid Carbon API that includes real-time emissions data. To get Academic licensing please see our Academia Page here.

  • The new methods developed for OGE have been peer-reviewed in an article published in Environmental Research Letters. This paper also discussed how OGE compares to and improves upon existing grid emissions datasets.
