Mission and approach

The energy transition is underway. Utilities are adding renewables, running clean energy and emissions programs, making commitments to customers and regulators about where their electricity comes from and what it emits. The data infrastructure to back those commitments is lagging: which generation, which certificates, which emissions, which customers. Without it, there’s no way to know whether clean energy and emissions programs are actually working, and no way to build better ones.

Clean energy and emissions accounting runs on three frameworks. Most tools attempt one, and can’t do it well without access to utility and grid operator systems. Singularity works across all three:

Location-based

What’s actually on the grid, where, and when, modeled from power flow. Emissions intensity by location and time, derived from physics, for the electricity consumed rather than just produced.

MISO CarbonFlow

Market-based

Which generation ran, which certificates were issued against it, and which customers they matched. One inventory, standard delivery mix and unserialized generation included.

Consequential

What the marginal emissions impact of each decision was. The framework that answers whether a clean energy decision reduced emissions or just moved accounting around.

MISO LME

2018 — Founded at Harvard

Wenbo, a postdoctoral researcher studying how to make grids run more cleanly, founded Singularity to build software that dispatched a battery system and minimized its emissions. Doing that meant first knowing what the carbon actually was, so the methodology came before the product.

2021 — Grid Carbon API

The first product was the Grid Carbon API, grid emissions data accessible to any developer. It worked, and it immediately hit its limit: public data could answer broad questions about the grid, but not which generation matched a specific customer’s use.

2022 — MISO

Grid operators had their own version of the problem: member utilities needed carbon intensity by hour and location, not just annual averages. MISO went first, opening its systems so Singularity could build CarbonFlow, tracing power flow across its 15-state grid in real time.

2024 — Southern Company

Southern Company brought the exact problem the Grid Carbon API couldn’t solve: Georgia Power’s large customers wanted their own auditable energy and emissions data, matched to their actual use, hour by hour instead of averaged annually. Singularity built it.

Today

Still the work: building the data infrastructure clean energy and emissions programs run on, from inside utility and grid operator systems.

The team includes researchers who worked on grid modeling before it was a product, policy people who work on the standards Singularity implements, and engineers who’ve spent careers on data infrastructure at scale. The problems don’t stay in one discipline. Grid physics, certificate accounting, regulatory policy, and data engineering all run into each other, usually in the same project.

Wenbo Shi founded Singularity Energy in 2018. Before Singularity, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University studying smart grid technology, publishing more than 20 peer-reviewed papers with more than 2,300 citations, two of which ranked among the most popular articles on IEEE. He holds a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California Los Angeles.

Paul Dixon has spent 20 years in product and analytics, most of it in data-intensive platforms and two-sided marketplaces. Prior to Singularity, he served as VP and General Manager at Rover, where he led product strategy for core services. He holds a Ph.D in Biological Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Greg Miller is a researcher and policy expert focused on grid decarbonization and carbon accounting. He sits on the GHG Protocol’s Scope 2 Technical Working Group, helping revise the global standard. Prior to Singularity, he held roles at CEBI and Peninsula Clean Energy. He holds a PhD in Energy Systems from UC Davis.

Amanda Myers Wisser is a climate and energy policy leader with experience across go-to-market strategy, regulatory affairs, and business development. Prior to Singularity, she was Director of Policy at WeaveGrid, where she led regulatory and business development work focused on electric vehicle load management. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Northwestern University.

Sarah Allen Neidhardt spent a decade in customer success and SaaS operations before joining Singularity. Most recently she was Director of Data Advisory at Measurabl, an ESG platform for real estate, where she led customer success and operations. She holds a B.A. in International Relations from Connecticut College.

Prior to Singularity, he was a full-stack engineer at Bevi, where he worked on product and infrastructure as the company experienced significant customer growth. She holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He holds a B.S. and M.Eng in Computer Science from MIT.
