Finding the right data
This page contains four sections that include different types of data for different purposes:
Carbon accounting data: Regional consumed emission rates for Scope 2, location-based accounting.
Power systems data: Regional generated emission rates that describe the emissions from the generation fleet
Plant-level data: operational and emissions data for individual power plants.
Data quality metrics: files containing metadata about the source of the data in the above sections and known issues.
Carbon accounting data.
Carbon accounting data contains the consumed emission rate for all Open Grid Emissions pollutants at the balancing-authority level.
The consumed rate includes emissions from electricity produced in a region as well as imports into and out of that region. For grid users, the consumed emission rate is the best way to estimate the emissions footprint of electricity use. To learn more about consumed emissions, check out our documentation.

Power systems data.
Power system data contains the generated emission rate and fuel mix for all Open Grid Emissions pollutants at the balancing-authority level.
The generated emissions and fuel mix is useful for users looking to understand the operations of the grid in their region, including policymakers and regulators. To learn more about generated emissions, check out our documentation.

Plant-level data.
Plant-level data from Open Grid Emissions includes estimates of pollutants and generation from all plants.
Plant-level data is appropriate for users interested in the operation of individual plants.
Note: Because of the large file size of the hourly plant-level data (~800MB zipped and > 8GB unzipped), we only provide hourly data for US units, and the national data is split into separate files for each balancing authority. Hourly data contains data for all plants, including plants that directly report hourly generation and emissions to CAMD and plants for which the hourly profiles have been imputed (see docs).

Data quality metrics.
Data quality metrics from Open Grid Emissions include metadata describing the published data. Users can see what portion of the data came from each input source, were calculated using which methods, and more. For more information about how to interpret these metrics see our documentation.
Data quality metrics are appropriate for users who want to understand the methodologies behind Open Grid Emissions.
